Noteringar - Benjamin was born Bengt Pehrsson in 1841 in southern Sweden. Because of the mandatory military service, famine, and poverty in Sweden, he wanted a chance at a better life. His older brother, Jons/John had immigrated to the U.S. in 1855 and by 1867, Benjamin was in the Swedish Navy. When the boat docked in NY, he left and followed John to Illinois. Afraid that he could be sent back to Sweden, and to sound more American, (as immigrants often did) he changed his name to Benjamin Peterson Hammer, and found work as a farm hand near his brother in Whiteside County. As soon as he had saved enough money, he sent for Nellie back home and they were married shortly after she arrived in early 1870. He continued to farm and was able to buy his own farm, the first of many he would own. He & Nellie had 12 children from 1871 to 1894, and were able to build a large new home for their growing family. A newspaper article in 1899 relates that early on the morning of August 1, his new barn in Union Grove was struck by lightning and totally destroyed, along with 25 tons of new hay, and 5 of his horses. It was the 3rd time his barn had been struck by lightning. Ben died in 1911 at the age of 71, but Nellie would live another 24 years and never remarry.
