Noteringar - John was born Jons Pehrsson in Sweden in 1827 and was 28 years old when he (and later his brother, Bengt/Ben) immigrated to the U.S. He changed his name to John Hammer and had just arrived in Moline, Iowa when a cholera epidemic broke out. He walked over 50 miles to the Fulton, IL, area to escape it. John went to work on the Chicago & Northwestern RR that ran between Morrison and Chicago, and after the railroad was completed he started farming in Union Grove Township in Whiteside County, IL.
John was 41 when he married Bessie, who had immigrated from Sweden 2 years earlier and they went on to have 10 children. In the 1890s they discovered a fire in their attic and almost everything was destroyed - their clothes, bedding, and even their food in the basement along with 50 bushels of potatoes. Somehow they survived and John farmed all his life and lived to be 84 before he passed away in 1911. His brother, Ben, died only 4 months later. All of John and Bessie's children were still living when Bessie died 6 years later in 1917.
