STOCKHOLM LOSES AGED PIONEER
John Brown Passes Away After a Residence of 45 Years in the County.
Another old settler has passed away in the town of Stockholm, and of whom can be truly said that he dared the hardships of early settler life and the Inidans (sic) and came to live and make his home in this part of Wright county forty-five years ago.
John Brown, whose death occurred at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Louis Hedlund, in Stockholm, was born on Oct. 10, 1828, in Mjellby, Blekinge, Sweden. He came to the states in 1854 and lived for some time in the state of Illinois. In 1860 he came to Minnesota and in 1862 he became a resident of this county and where he has since made his home. His early years here were very severe, not only in trying to work out a livelihood in the big woods but also in escaping the ravages of the Indians when they became unruly and went on the war path and had to take refuge at Rockford with a number of the other first settlers.
Mr Brown owned a fine farm in Stockholm up to a few years ago when it was sold. Part of this was homesteaded and making the entry before the homestead act was law. His wife died about two years ago and since has made his home with his son Benjamin. About three weeks ago he came here from Minneapolis to stay with his daughter where he spent his last days. His illness was very brief and his death occurred on Sunday June 23rd at the age of 78 years, 7 months and 27 days.
He leaves four children, namely, Chas. Brown Peter Brown, of Butte, Mont., Benj. Brown, of Minneapolis, and Mrs. Louis Hedlund, of Stockholm. The funeral took place from the Hedlund home on Tuesday forenoon and with special services at the Swedish Lutheran church at Stockholm, at 11 o'clock, conducted by the church pastor.
